"THE BIGGEST LOSER" UPDATE to Atlanta OPEN Casting Call

"THE BIGGEST LOSER" Casting Director Sets the Record Straight!

I spoke directly with Casting Director Ian Young late this evening about whether or not having undergone any form of weight loss surgery would prevent someone from becoming a contestant.

    The short answer?
"No. As long as they have at least 100 lbs.to lose we don't care what they've tried in the past to lose weight."

Ian went on to talk about what the producers are looking for in potential contestants:
"We're looking for people with great personality; not as in, telling jokes or performing; but, as in being open and real in front of people they don't know. They need to be outgoing. They're going to be on camera in front of millions. They have to be intensely committed to changing their lives and losing the weight."

"The challenge for people who have 'only' 100 lbs.to lose is to sustain their will to compete at the highest level; they're likely to lose it fairly soon - then what? We can't have them continuing to lose weight - that's unhealthy! But we can't have them stop competing or sneaking extra food to hold their own. You see the problem?"

    So there you have it.
    My opinion?
If you've had weight loss surgery and gained back a signficant amount of weight; or, if you've had WLS within the last 6-9 months but your slow rate of weight loss has kept you in the morbidly obese weight loss category; and, the opportunity to be on "THE BIGGEST LOSER" thrills you   go for it!!

    NOT "Treasure-Mapping" ???

IMPORTANT! Clarification of this Sunday's art workshop:

This workshop is nottreasure-mapping,” except for the use of collage technique.

In treasure-mapping, your personality already has an objective in mind and

seeks out images to illustrate what it has formulated.

In my workshops we ask the personality to sit back and observe

as our more hidden faculties of mind and spirit are allowed to

come out and play. This is accomplished using different

imaginative/creative tasks in which the message/story/overview emerges

from the images that we are drawn to or attract.

I don't want to get too detailed as part of the fun and creative energy

comes from the childlike excitement of not knowing the assignment!

But, what happens is that we begin to experience the energy of INSPIRATION

that evokes a dialogue with your capacity for INTUITION.

Because they are being triggered by physical images

    (as contrasted with daydreams),

your mind learns how to find inspiration that feeds intuition

when dealing with physical reality -

    be it health/ job/ relationships/ spiritual practice...

    Hope
you'll take that leap of faith and play with us!

Remember: 2:00 - 4:30PM at The Inner Space in Sandy Springs

Tuition only $45 & includes allll art supplies!

There are a few spaces left as I post this.

    Does taking action always seem
just a few more variables away? Rainbow
Are you buried alive in factoids, unable to take action? Clock
Are you intimately familiar with bouts of OVERWHELM? Don't tell anyone

There is an antidote to this assault on your efforts to remain rational!
It cannot take affect, however, by studying it or reading about it...
You just have to experience it! Wink

INTUITION, Light bulb when developed, is dazzling in its speed,
wisdom, creativity and usefulness in guiding you into
the right and perfect choice, action, decision, behavior,
    relationship, answers for you!

The simplest and most immediately practical method of developing
your intuition is learning to "think" in pictures! Camera

WHAT IS "SOLAR WATER" & WHY YOU SHOULD CARE!

    Photograph by Lauralyn Bellamy (c)2009

HO'OPONONO is a Hawain healing process that is also most congenial with the Judeo-Christian traditions. It is based on the premise that we are created in the image of our divine Source, aka God, and therefore designed to be experiencing our embodied selves as clear, available instruments for transmitting God's perfect love and healing.

There is a litany one recites to oneself and in the presence of the Divine that continuously heals, restores and renews our capacity to be an instrument of God's unconditional love:

"I LOVE YOU. I'M SORRY. PLEASE FORGIVE ME. THANK YOU."

This litany can be said in any order one feels led to say at the moment in response to the particular situation/person/condition triggering one's awareness of the need for healing. or "cleaning."

These statements are examples of four of the five categories of prayer in Judaism and Christianity:

Red heartadoration; Broken heartapology; Rainbowpetition; Red rosethanksgiving (the fifth category is lamentation).

What's this got to do with blue glass bottles sitting in the sun?

Ho'oponopono teaches that when water is exposed to sunlight in a stoppered, cobalt blue glass bottle for 15-30min.,  this "solarized water" has extraordinary physically healing and spiritually cleansing properties. One uses the solarized water as an additive to regular water, it's properties are so strong. One does not, apparently, drink it "straight!"

I'm just beginning to take solar water, so I'll let you know what I experience in the days to come. I found these bottles at the crafts supply store, MICHAEL'S, which I believe is a national chain. They were only $1.99 each!!

Let me know what you experience. Also, if you find inexpensive sources of blue cobalt glass bottles, please share it here!

    Thank you! Red rose

    I love you! Red heart

    EASTER REFLECTIONS ON OBESITY

    Photograph (c)2008 Lauralyn Bellamy

For the story of the bodily resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth on the 3rd day to have the foundational importance American Christians declare, we must recognize the primacy he and his immediate followers gave to being a man of flesh and blood.

Gift with a bowJesus embraced the gift of embodiment; the call to heal physical disease and suffering; to enjoy eating and drinking in ways that cherished participation in the beloved community of fellow Jews, observing the Mosaic dietary laws and the responsibility to feed his followers - not just spiritually, but literally!

The resurrection stories Luke recorded in the Acts of the Apostles all focus on the physically embodied Christ Pizzaeating and drinking with his followers, placing "doubting" Thomas' hand in the gash in his side made by a centurion as he hung on the cross...

    IMAGINE:
    • Jesus of Nazareth hanging on the cross at Gethsemane.
    • See him as if you were Mary, his mother, or his beloved disciple, John, standing near the foot of the cross.
    • See the crown of thorns and the bloody tracks it has released.
    • See the linen diaper smudged where he stumbled and fell on the dirt as he carried his cross.
    • See the nails in his wrists and through his feet.
    • See him 100 lbs. overweight.
    • See his morbidly obese body sagging from the cross.

    What is your first thought?

    Your first feeling?

How would a morbidly obese Jesus affect your understanding of who he was then and now?

Would an obese Jesus change the way you regarded him? His teachings? His acts recorded in the gospels?

Why, when Jesus of Nazareth has been portrayed in works of art as white European, black African, olive-skinned Semite, almond-skinned Asian - even female (the Episcopal Cathedral of St. John the Divine in NYC has exhibited a larger-than-life statue of a "CHRISTA REGINA" hanging from the cross)!

       - why have there been NO paintings and statues of a fat Jesus? What is the message that has been spontaneously, universally forwarded down through the ages in showing Jesus as a normally weighted human being?

And for those of us who regard him as Light bulbour Way-shower, our Savior, our Guru, our Master Teacher, our Lord - are we not supposed to Camera emulate him?

It's not about "earning" the Christ's approval or God's love; both are unconditional to all who open their hearts to receive them.

If embodiment is not THE central focal point of God's experiment in making the spirit flesh, what is?

So during the SEASON of Easter - yes, the Christian calendar regards Easter as 50 days long, ending with the gift of PENTECOST -

Clockspend 5 minutes a day to contemplate the image of Jesus of Nazareth - Left hugalive, crucified, resurrected - in a normally-weighted body; and,

allow the spirit of Wisdom Light bulb to teach you how to abide and dwell in peace in your own body.Rainbow

    Red heartLovingly sent,

    Lauralyn

What Does It Cost to Drop 30 Pounds?

    By Bankrate.com

Despite studies saying Americans are getting fatter every year, people are obsessed with weight loss, and the business of losing weight has ballooned into a $30 billion-a-year industry in the U.S. How much would you be willing to spend to lose 30 pounds?

[The American epidemic of obesity & morbid obesity is way beyond a mere 30 pounds of excess fat! If you are agonizing over the same 15-30 lbs. and you’re over 5’2” tall and female, your dieting is not about the weight…Contact me!]

There's no shortage of options when it comes to weight-loss programs. The key is finding a program that fits your lifestyle and budget. Of course, you could always go the old-fashioned route, reducing calories and increasing exercise, but

[- Let’s be honest, it’s not about learning how to keep it off; it’s always been about discovering how many ways you can learn to lose weight; so, obviously, you MUST regain it!]

many dieters benefit from added structure and support, not to mention the accountability that accompanies an organized program. (There's nothing like a little peer pressure to keep you motivated.)

    Jenny Craig

The weight-loss brand marketed by celebrities including Queen Latifah, Valerie Bertinelli and Phylicia Rashad boasts a sensible approach to weight loss, advocating an average drop in body mass of about 1%, or 1 to 2 pounds per week. The program addresses mind-body aspects of weight loss by helping clients adopt healthful eating and exercise habits, as well as encouraging them to examine the underlying causes of their weight problems. [Insight + $1.75 will get you a cuppa coffee at Starbuck’s. Examine away & you’ll still sabotage your weight loss! ]

Jenny Rewards, priced at $399 or $359, is a 12-month program that rewards dieters' efforts and weight loss with discounts on food. There's also an at-home option that is similar except you also pay for shipping and have consultations by phone.

Sign-up costs include weekly one-on-one counseling, personalized menus, motivational plans and assorted manuals and guides, depending on membership level.

Then, there's the cost of food. The prepackaged foods generally cost $12 to $18 per day, or $84 to $126 per week.*

Cost of losing 30 pounds: $399 or $359 (if paid upfront), not including food.* [Add in the food, $126 x 52weeks = $6,552.00. Grand total? About $7,000! ]

    NutriSystem

This at-home system (no office visits or weigh-ins) will appeal to those who don't like to cook. It involves eating the company's prepackaged meals exclusively. The 28-day program includes breakfast, lunch, dinner and snacks (you may add fresh vegetables, fruit and dairy). [Then again, you may not! Who wants fresh fruit & veggies anyway?!] Support is offered through a free Web site.

"Some people lose 1 pound a week; some people lose 3 pounds a week," says a NutriSystem sales representative. If, on average, you lose 2 pounds a week, the diet will take about 4 months. It's cheaper to sign up for the Auto-Delivery Savings program (the food keeps coming until you cancel), which costs $299.95 per month, shipping incl.

Cost of losing 30 pounds: $1,199.80, including all food, except fresh fruits, vegetables and dairy. [Leaving WHAT? Frozen chicken fingers and fishsticks?]

    Weight Watchers

This is one of the most popular diets in the world, probably because there's no such thing as taboo food. The diet is based on portion control and involves weekly support meetings. [Both valuable factors in successful dieting; but, in and of themselves, not effective in constructing a ‘post-diet life’ in a normal-sized, healthy body.]

The Flex plan means each food is assigned a point value, and you can eat anything as long as you stay within your allotted points. The Core plan involves a pre-approved list of foods… Weight Watchers food items…are optional.

Registration is between $15 and $20, depending on location. Weekly meeting fees range from about $10 to $15, again, location-dependent. The standard monthly plan for Weight Watchers Online costs $46.90 the first month and $16.95 for subsequent months. Plan to lose 1 to 2 pounds per week for 20 weeks to reach a 30-pound weight-loss goal.

Cost of losing 30 pounds: $214.80 to $299.80, depending on location, or $97.75 online, not including food.

    The Zone Diet

This well-rounded plan is based on a 40-30-30 ratio of daily calories obtained from carbohydrates, proteins and favorable fats.

Though you could buy a book and follow the diet independently, [A sure-fire recipe for failure!] why not do it like the stars? Opt for the company's “In the Zone Delivery.” The service delivers a customized daily supply of food (3 meals and 2 snacks) to subscribers in most metropolitan areas by 6 a.m. each day. Outside major cities, you can receive two to three days' worth of food at a time for a higher delivery fee.

Signing up for the 30-day "Chef Selected" plan will cost $39.99 a day plus a shipping charge, which is $3 for customers in most cities and $10 for those in other areas. If you want to try it out for 2 weeks, you'll pay $44.99 per day plus shipping. The average Zone dieter loses 8 to 10 pounds a month, and it will take 3 or 4 months to drop 30 pounds. [If you’re clinically obese or morbidly obese, hope you win the lottery!]

Cost of losing 30 pounds: $3,869 to $5,159, which includes $3 a day for delivery.

    Free advice

These diets are just the tip of the iceberg. The options for losing weight are endless.  [The endless variety! Tha’t what makes yoyo dieting so much fun!]

It's also important to be realistic. [Meaning, there’s a 90% chance you’ll gain it all back, and more, in a year or two! NIH study.]

Ask yourself whether you can afford the program and whether it fits your lifestyle. If you have the motivation but not the means, don't fret. Instead, consider the age-old method for losing weight: Reduce the number of calories you take in while exercising to increase the amount you burn off. [It’s “age-old” because it delivers on its promise. The problem is, it doesn’t promise to show you how to keep from gaining it back!]

    Facing "Fear, Itself."

    Facing “Fear, Itself!”

©2009 Lauralyn Bellamy, MA, MDiv, cert. Dream Coach®

“The only thing we have to fear is fear itself.”

    - Pres. Franklin D. Roosevelt’s first inaugural address,

    March 4, 1933

    1.     Fear is real.

    2.     Fear is a necessary instrument in our behavioral toolkit.

    3.     Fear serves a valid purpose in our lives.

    4.     Fear is a messenger bearing vital information.

    5.     Fear is to be heeded, thanked and dismissed.

    6.     Misunderstood, fear can injure, distort and generally

    make a bad situation worse.

The good news lies in learning how we were designed to respond to the fact of fear when it arises in our lives – individually and collectively – so that the outcome is beneficial.

As the current recession deepens and its impact is directly experienced by more of us, it is critically important that we change the way we think of and react to fear. Think of this article as a condensed emergency manual on how to effectively engage fearful economic situations.

    1. Fear is real.

The fact that our brains are hard-wired to generate the physiological and psychological responses categorized as fear suggests it has a purpose in promoting and safeguarding human life. Everything about the design and function of the human being is organized according to the primary law: survival; and the secondary law – minimize pain and maximize pleasure.

If you are experiencing a fear response it is because, on some level, some part of your brain has determined that your survival is imperiled or you are at risk of pain, or in pain.

Trying to ignore it, dismiss it out of hand, or defy it may work in the short run; but there will be a cost to our health and happiness in the long run (if one is permitted to enjoy a long run).

    2. Fear is a necessary instrument in our behavioral toolkit.

As originally designed, fear is meant to trigger a behavioral response in us. It is the “starter pistol” that sets us off in one of two races: fight or flight. Either way, it is intended to produce an appropriate and effective ACTION in us: do we engage the threatening situation or remove ourselves from it?

    3. Fear serves a valid purpose in our lives.

Not only does fear serve the universal imperative to survive; it serves as a powerful and creative teacher in our individual and collective understanding of our strengths and weaknesses. As a teacher, fear creates learning opportunities for us to identify and develop our strengths for resolving the threat or crisis that are rewarding.

Fear as a teacher is intent upon guiding us into the most comprehensive understanding and development of who each of us is in all our individual permutations, and as a people participating in a collective action or members covenanting to serve the Commonwealth.

Properly understood, fear is meant to bring out the best in us.

4.Fear is a messenger bearing vital information.

The part of the brain in charge of dispensing fear to catch our attention is the oldest part in its evolution, the Limbic System; I call it the reptilian brain, As such, it is the most sensitive instrument for scanning our total environment at a speed and attention to detail that makes the rational part of our brain look sluggish and dull. Long before a circumstance or person registers as a threat on our consciousness-radar, fear is activating alerts in our bodies, dreams, daydreams and moods.

When we notice a “knot” in our stomachs, a “tightening” in our throats, skin rashes, chills, headaches, nightmares, seemingly arbitrary moodiness, anxious thoughts popping in from seemingly nowhere – that’s our reptilian brain on a mission!

At this point, our conscious brain should begin a collaboration to properly identify, assess and formulate an effective and appropriate reaction.

    5. Fear is to be heeded, thanked and dismissed.

Fear is merely the messenger bringing raw data with some historical background information.  Whatever news it brings, all of it should be catalogued for review and action or disposal.

After that, it can either be invited to go back to sentry duty or be a passive observer of the process engaging the rest of our brains: the systematic, rational, analytical in dialogue with the intuitive, creative, risk-taking, expressive parts.

If fear intrudes during this part, treat it as a middle-level project manager pointing out potential weaknesses or risks to be addressed.

    6. Misunderstood, fear can injure, distort and generally

        make a bad situation worse.

And, of course, that is what our culture has been doing with fear for the last 100+ years. Fear has been treated as a disease that requires medicating, or an illusion that calls for behavioral strategies distracting our attention away from it.

“Whenever I feel afraid, I hold my head erect and whistle a happy tune so no one will suspect I’m afraid…

“The result of this deception is very strange to tell! For when I fool the people I fear, I fool myself as well!”

    - From “The King and I” by Rogers & Hammerstein

We are taught: Fear is our enemy and we should fear it.

The best way to respond to fear is simply ignore it or master it.

It is obvious that in our culture, most of us haven’t mastered the best way.

Instead, we rely upon liquor, food, mood-altering drugs, shopping and other

instruments of addiction to  “chill out” and “numb ourselves” in search of

Oblivion, a hiding place from fear.

Yet, there is good news abiding within our current economic recession!

      We have an opportunity:

    ·        To recognize fear, itself, as a catalyst for changing our behavior;

    ·        Learning from the decisions, actions (and inactions) that brought us to

                this point; and,

    • Choosing new ways to live and govern ourselves that bring forth the

                best in us;

    • To leave a legacy for future generations of Americans of which we

                can be proud.

    • To be innovative and creative in collaborating with one another to change our response to what is fearful.
    • To regard the experience of fear as a signal to take beneficial action.

We have nothing to fear and everything to learn!

See WHO in September, Oprah? (C) Lauralyn Bellamy

    Oprah_Cover

    See Who in September, Oprah?©

By Lauralyn Bellamy, MA, MDIV, cert.  Dream Coach(R) & DC Group Leader

Oprah Winfrey, July 2008 issue, O, The Oprah Magazine,What I Know For Sure:”

I know for sure that I am not [sic] my body. I feel more connected to consciousness, or soul, or inner spirit – whatever you choose to name the formless being that is the essence of who we are. I think of all the years I’ve wasted hating myself fat, wanting myself thin…Worrying when I wasn’t dieting, then eating everything I wanted until the next diet...

“But I’ve given up scale-watching --- letting a number determine how I see myself and whether I’m worthy of a good day…You’re not your body, and for sure you’re not your body image.

“That’s a free at last kind of recognition. No more wasted time.”

Oprah Winfrey, September 2008 issue, O, The Oprah Magazine, “What I Know For Sure:”

“’LEADERSHIP IS THE KEY TO EVERYTHING.’…Recently, though, I found myself overwhelmed by a lack of leadership in almost every area of my life… I’ve been on an international search for a new Head of [my] School [in South Africa], while also searching for a CEO and President for my new TV network, ‘OWN’ – while also doing two show a day, banking radio shows to air in the future, trying to read very page in this magazine before it goes to print, having preshow meetings with producers, dealing with the business of all the businesses and hearing from Gayle: ‘Your “What I Know for Sure” column is waaay overdue. You’re holding up the process!’

“I had a LOL moment when I was told that with everything else I have going on, I was supposed to write a column about being overwhelmed.

“How about this: I AM OVERWHELMED! …Flying back and forth from Africa to Chicago to California to New York. Doing. Doing. Doing.

“So I stopped. Everything. For one day…I stopped doing in order to return to the being of myself.”  (emphasis added)

How does a person who is not her body and in a “crisis in leadership,” solve this problem? Oprah set aside a single day to “do nothing.” But how does a “formless being” that is “more connected to consciousness or soul, or inner spirit” actually do nothing? The rest of the column is Oprah’s description of that one, idyllic day.

Turns out, she was NOT doing "nothing;" rather, she was actively allowing her body “free time” to play. She immersed herself in the experience of her physical senses:

      • “I watched sunlight filter between the branches…”
      • “I listened to the birds…”
      • “I took a few deep breaths…”
      • “I said, ’Thank you’ out loud…” (vocalizing and listening)
      • “I filled a bowl with lemon sorbet and fresh strawberries…” (sight and smell)
      • “I savored every spoonful…”
      • “I went for a run with my dogs…”
      • “I sat in a tub of bubbles until I got crinkly…”
      • “I read myself to sleep with Mary Oliver* poems…”

*Mary Oliver observes the world of nature with awe and wonder!

In other words, to treat the mental state of “being overwhelmed,” Oprah had to immerse herself in the world experienced through her body! She had to re-member and re-collect her physical senses, exercise her physical body, allow her imagination to wander through the sensual natural world painted with poetry.

Under these pleasurable physical conditions, she was also able to revive her spiritual practices and worship!

    ·         “I pulled out my gratitude journal, in which I’d been too tired to write even a sentence for months…”

    ·         “I let those trees remind me how to be: still…”

    ·         “I wrote in my journal: ‘I am grateful for my breath and the recognition that I am here, alive. Breathing…’

    ·         “I prayed. I meditated. I napped. I filled three more pages with praise and gratitude for all that’s gone right… I watched the sun move across the sky…”

What did Oprah learn about her Self from the day she stopped everything? She ends her September column with news:

The next day I found the new Head of School. Two days later, a president for OWN.

I no longer have a crisis in leadership. I know for sure that what’s best for me is already on its way.

Who will show up in Oprah’s October column?

My hope is she will have noticed that it was only when she paid attention to and exercised all her physical senses that her spiritual practices of prayer, meditation, and thanksgiving were revived.

My hope is she will recognize that her physically punishing work schedule was contributing to the “confusion…crisis and chaos” that is the psychological state of being “OVERWHELMED!”

My hope is that she will take steps to personally work with some of the talented people who regularly write for her magazine to expand her experience of Self to integrate, “the formless being that is the essence of who we are” with her unique physical body - as much a manifestation of Self as her Soul!

It wasn’t her body that fixated on the scale, ate mindlessly to reduce the intolerable anxiety and exhaustion overwhelming her, and bears the extra pounds she now carries. It was her spirit that had gotten detached from her body and fallen victim to the ideas generated by an unchallenged ego on a power rampage.

Oprah probably still subscribes to the idea that in order to enjoy physical health, we need to “listen to our bodies.”  I experience that as listening to a part of who I Am. But if “you’re not your body,” whom are you listening to when your body complains? See WHO in September, Oprah?

    Iron Cat Guards Cesar Gato

"Iron Cat" Guards Cesar Gato's Rest

"Iron Cat" has been a bit of whimsy hiding in the front yards at 3 of our homes. Yesterday, when we brought Cesar's body home to DREAMHAVEN,  it seemed a bit of divine inspiration to station Iron Cat atop the paving stone that marks his final resting place.

He's under a beautiful, old rhododendron "tree" near our meditation niche. Iron Cat can be spotted from our driveway and our front garden footpath. He now brings a smile to my lips and a prayer of gratitude to my spirit every time I see him.
